I just wondered about this. I still like the name Genius Underbottom. I wonder if I could develop it along with my autism interests.
For example, Genius Underbottom could be the name of an autistic child, and the Case Files (or perhaps better, the adventures of) Genius Underbottom could be stories about what autism is, how he learns best, how he is perceived by his family, friends, and the public. Just a flash of an idea, nothing concrete yet.
I think the name is appropriate because I tend to see autistics as geniuses who simply can't communicate like the rest of us do. I think "Genius" is a fun name for a kid who is smart, adventurous, and heroic. "Underbottom" would be the secondary name that brings a sense of humility, something to overcome. In my experience kids often pick on a last name, so it would also be something to put Genius on the same level as other children who are also made fun of in school (perhaps a basis for friendship, a distraction from the "disability" to find strength in others around you and play up all kinds of remarkable abilities).
Sidenote: if the story would take place anywhere, it could pretty well take place in Madison, as there is a lot of community support for autistics there. A Wisconsin suburb would be easy for me to identify with since I practically grew up there. It's likely I could tell the story no closer than a third person omniscient narrative mode, since I am not autistic, nor do I live near someone who is. I can only study and write about what I learn.
More later :)
